The New 2012 Volkswagen 2.0L TDI Engine

TDI stands for Turbocharged Direct Injection. The turbocharger provides the 2.0L engine with pressurized fresh air for maximum efficiency; and after compression, clean diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinders. Using this "Clean Diesel," the new Passat TDI encompasses three things: engine technology that reduces emissions, increases fuel economy, and ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel.

3.6L FSI Direct Fuel Injection from Volkswagen

The FSI engine offers better fuel economy and matches that with an eco-friendly performance. With direct injection, the fuel is pumped right into the combustion chamber. Once in the chamber, the fuel is injected into the intake manifold (outside the cylinder) where it is also mixed.
Volkswagen's special combustion chamber lets the fuel that is being injected to mix with the air entering the combustion chamber within a few thousandths of a second. This allows for extremely energetic engine response to inputs from the accelerator pedal.
